Let It Out! Building Communities through Actor Vocal Training and Ensemble Practice with Young Hearing Impaired Adults
This paper reports on aspects of the "Let It Out!" research project, which investigates the effectiveness of actor vocal training and ensemble practice as a self-empowering tool for building communities with Young Hearing Impaired Adults. The data analysis from the workshops demonstrates how the pedagogical and emancipatory nature of the actor vocal training contributes to building a community and culture of practice, which is both transferable and empowering to other groups of hearing impaired children and adolescents. This paper addresses the application of a performative inquiry methodology to analyse the impact of actor vocal training techniques taught to a group of hearing impaired adults over a 3 month period.

Geraldine is head of the School of Performing Arts at the Faculty of the Victorian College of the Arts and the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music in the University of Melbourne, Australia. Her experience as a teacher, actor, and youth theatre director spans over 25 years. She trained in London at Middlesex University and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She has a Masters in education from the University of Melbourne and is currently enrolled in the Doctor of Education (research) program in the Graduate School of Education at the University of Melbourne. Since 2007, she has worked in partnership with Cochlear Australia through Australia Research Council Funding and subsequent direct funding from Cochlear, to analyse the effectiveness of actor vocal training as a complementary rehabilitation model for young adult cochlear implant users. Her professional freelance work includes working as a voice and communications consultant for the corporate and government sectors, specialising in working with people from a non-English speaking background. She works as a vocal / dialogue coach for the Melbourne Theatre Company, Malthouse Theatre, ABC, and SBS.
