In the frame of my PhD thesis, I have been able to witness that art (i.e. plastic and visual arts, theater, poetry and music) is taken by collectives of immigrants in Barcelona as a mean to express themselves and condemn situations of social exclusion that they face in the present society. Are there any spaces of cultural interaction where these situations of social inclusion/exclusion are debated, where residents can hear the voice of their new neighbors, the immigrants, without the mediation of political or academic institutions? Intercultural theater, as we shall see, is an example of how cultural contact is capable of bringing forward new identities in urban contexts, based on the plurality of identities and necessary respect towards the actual migratory fluxes.
