The Study of Integrating the Learning Theory into a Web-based Instruction for Undergraduates: Taking Music Appreciation as an Example

Music appreciation is the essential course of the general education for undergraduates. However, some traditional instructional design may hamper the interest for music so that students can’t get an overview about the elements of music. Furthermore, the general education was viewed as cultivating the basic ability for collaboration through practice. Last, when confronting information technology, teaching methods and presentation need to change. Thus, this study adopts web-based instruction integrated with the learning theory. To examine the learning effectiveness of this instruction, an eight-week blended learning course was designed. The music appreciation test, learning attitude and learning performance was analyzed using analysis of multivariance procedures. The results indicated a significant difference between two groups. Some possible reasons were discussed and provided recommendations for future studies.

I got the master and bachelor degree of music education in Taiwan, majoring at piano performance. Studying cross-discipline in the period of my PhD is a milestone. Combining the e-learning theory with music teaching is the key issue of my dissertation. Furthermore, keeping the continous curiosity is the driving force of my research. To meet the future need of the society, I will gradually transfer the interest on the older beginners’ learning performance in music appreciation or the introduction of music playing.
